I was just on the radio, dahhlings. And I am WAY too amused by the fact that the sound booth at the ABC studios in Southbank is called the Tardis and there were signs for 'Tardis Visitors'.

I WAS IN THE TARDIS YAY ME.

1. Today at work I finished something that's been hanging over my head for MONTHS and it was a HUGE relief and I just hope it works. /cryptic. I just needed to talk it over with someone else and get some feedback on what my next steps should be and also be reassured that it wasn't totally awful. Note to self: you can ask for help, especially from people who are technically your supervisor.

2. Also this week, we went through a few of the things from the box of stuff we brought back after Rohan's mum died. Just a few things. Rohan pulled out a brand new electric carving knife, still in box, held it out to me and said "Smell this", and instantly I was transported to that house in Swan Hill. It smelt just like the linen closet there.

3. I'm wearing one of Rohan's mum's rings now. Most of her jewellery was cheap stuff from Avon but this ring is a very fine square-cut garnet, with marcasite, in a silver setting. It's actually quite unlike most of her other things, most of which are quite flowery and feminine whereas this is straight-edged. I wonder where it came from. It fits perfectly. I think of her often when I wear it.

4. For the past week or so Rohan and I have spotted a BUNNEH further down the road when we go to work. Lately we've also spotted it in the evenings when we've been coming home. The BUNNEH is a white-and-fawn coloured BUNNEH and it is running free, unfettered, but always nibbling on the nature strip or hopping around in the driveway of one particular house. At first we thought it was an escapee, but surely someone would have caught it by now? We feared for its safety with dogs and cars around but it seems quite at home. For those of you who have known BUNNEHs, would it be feasible that someone is letting it out in their yard like you would a cat or dog? I have only ever known the wild variety and of course they flee pretty much as soon as I see them.

Merlin spoilers under the cut )

The antibiotics and puffer are working already - my coughing is much, much less than it was although it is still very bad at night. I went on a cooking spree on Friday, making salade nicoise for lunch, spring lamb soup for dinner, and a nommy citrus yogurt cake with orange syrup. SO GOOD. Making more salade nicoise today - I'm trying to keep up healthy eating.

I watched a doco on the History Channel last night called 'Firestorm' about the Black Saturday fires. It was obviously made for overseas sale, since A) they called them "forest fires" and B) they spent a lot of time explaining where Melbourne was, what eucalypts were, what the Stay or Go policy entails, etc. It was actually very interesting learning (from what they had to explain) where our fires differ from everywhere else in the world (such as that spotting doesn't happen anywhere near as much in other countries, or that radiant heat is a bigger killer here).

Anyway, while they did a good job of explaining the background, and included much of the most compelling footage from the day (including the film taken by Daryl Hull, who they also interviewed, as Marysville burned around him), there were some big flaws in the program. First is that it seemed truncated. They spent so much time leading up to it, showing footage of CFA volunteers getting their gear on and stuff like that, but they didn't mention, for example, that 90% of Marysville was destroyed. They didn't mention the number of deaths - surprising considering how much they talked about the "terrible toll" and " the state will never be the same again", etc. And worst of all they only mentioned the Murrundindi and Kilmore East fires - which, ok, they were the biggest and worst, but the Churchill, Beechworth and Bendigo complexes also killed people.

Lastly, and most insultingly, they said that "In rural Victoria, most residents went about their day oblivious to the looming danger..." Erm, NO.

Some people were oblivious, I'm sure - I have always been a bit peeved at the guy whose wife died, who was really critical of the government and emergency services and who said that "...my wife was very simple. She just listened to CDs on the way to work, she never read a newspaper, she didn't watch television news..." because if you live anywhere in a civilized country, where you depend on public emergency services, you have a duty to keep yourself informed. And if you live in a rural area where you know the fire risk is high in summer, you should bloody well inform yourself in summer of how the situation is going. You can't expect your own personal notification of danger.

However, I don't think that attitude was typical. I knew it was going to be an unprecedentedly bad day. I'm sure most people *did* know. Some people were cautious but had seen fire before and figured that if they were well-prepared they'd be OK. Some people were very conscientious and did everything they were advised to do, and some of them, no matter how well-prepared they were, still died. This was an event on a scale we have never seen before. But we'll be seeing them again, so we'd better bloody well learn from it, and vague generalisations about how oblivious "most" people were do not help.

I have post-nasal drip. Stupid body. Last night I coughed so hard I threw up. Lovely.

But! I signed up for Goodreads months ago, and then I forgot about it, but I needed to talk about All Clear so badly that I went and wrote a review. And people responded! I am having an actual conversation about a book! YOU GUYS! I need to do more on there.

Are you on goodreads? What's your name? I am vanessarama there.

We bought some lollies for Halloween, but only had three kids turn up together. They were all in street clothes although one had a mask. What's the point of Halloween if you don't dress up? I was so tempted to tell Rohan not to give them anything although he did ask them where their costumes were.

Today is the day between a weekend and Melbourne Cup day. Half our office has the day off. Hopefully all Melbourne will be this quiet and I can get some things done!

Oh. Merlin. 3.08, 'The Eye of the Phoenix'. Squee and far too much analysis. Spoilers ahoy! )
Also, they filmed much of it in two places I visited just six weeks ago: Puzzlewood and Caerphilly Castle. Which reminds me, I must get more of my UK pics up.
vanessarama: (merlin: slightly amused)
I was back at work today for the first time in nearly two weeks. I'm knackered now! I still have The Cough That Can Be Heard On Mars, but am mostly better otherwise. Was touchingly delighted to be with colleagues, even the ones who drive me a bit nuts sometimes; being sick I've barely spoken to other people (except Rohan and his family) and I've missed having other people to distract with random crap talk to.

On Friday I found Connie Willis' All Clear, the second half of Blackout, in the letterbox at 3:44 PM. I finished it at 10:04 PM. I did nothing but gobble it up all day. The emotional payoff was there, although I had a few issues with the book. Now I want other people to read it so I can squee and discuss it with them.

And finally, Colin Morgan can apparently be tied to everything else on TV or indeed in life. My Morgan-sensor finds connections everywhere. In just one afternoon last week, there was:

- a Time Team repeat in which they were digging up things near Armagh, and the TV guide said it was filmed in 1996 and they had some kids hanging round and I was all "... OMG wee!Colin could be one of them..."
- a conversation with Ben in which he said something about Mark Gatiss and I was all "... who has been on stage with Colin Morgan..."
- a thing on telly about lemurs which made me say "... Colin's favourite animal..."

THIS IS A DISEASE. SEND HELP. OR COLIN. ACTUALLY, JUST SEND COLIN.
vanessarama: (merlin: broken)
Something else I noticed while I was in the UK: RECESSION. It's everywhere.

We didn't notice it so much in London (probably because we stayed in a relatively nice area and also because we were mainly going to tourist spots) but in the provincial towns it was very, very noticeable. Every single town had multiple vacant shops and every local news bulletin was reporting either the closure of some local factory or massive job cuts by local council. In some places we went past industrial estates or business parks, some of which looked pretty new, which were completely deserted.

OK, here we have experienced a bit of a financial crisis, but it is NOTHING like what's going on there. The scale of it is massive. At least I still walk past shops with 'Help Wanted' signs in the window here.
vanessarama: (merlin: happy merlin)
Rohan has my cold now, poor baby. He came down with it on Friday, which was his birthday! I'm still coughing away like mad too. There has been much chicken soup made and drunk in this house over the past few days. But thanks to Ben, Lou and Adam, we had a lovely quiet Saturday night birthday get-together for Rohan. Ben even made yummy cake with butter icing!

This weekend I finished something, which is now blocking. This is Icarus:

It's made from remaindered pure cashmere from Colourmart and the pattern is by Miriam Felton (mimknits on Ravelry).

This is huge. The wingspan is over 6 feet. I know the spine is being blocked a bit crooked, but let's ignore that shall we? Look at the pretty closeup instead.

The first picture is more accurate, colourwise. It's a beautiful vivid blue.

I started this way back in... oooh... January? It seemed as if it would never end, and the rows just got longer and longer, so I would keep abandoning it for other things. I'm so glad I finally have it finished.
vanessarama: (Default)
Back at work, but coughing significantly. Fortunately work did not implode in my absence. I am apparently not allowed to have all-in-one cold and flu tablets due to my high blood pressure, so I've been forced to buy nasal spray and cough mixture and panadeine. Hopefully they'll collectively get me through.

I am taking a fleeting overnight visit to Brisbane tonight. Although I would love to see my Brissie flisties, I will be taking a raincheck on account of being sick and coughing a lot. I think I'll need to sleep and save my voice for tomorrow's workshop.

Stupid Virgin Blue won't let me check in online for some reason, Stupid McStupid.

Watched second episode of Sherlock last night. I wish people wouldn't say Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Morgan are lookalikes; sure, they both have lovely cheekbones, but Mr Cumberbatch lacks Mr Morgan's elegant nose and gorgeous eyes. Rohan and I have started using 'Cumberbatch' as a word when we can't think of a suitable real word. Don't cumberbatch me! Pass me that... cumberbatch.

Three weeks from today, I will be in London.

Bit better

Feel a bit better this morning. The brain is at least working better than it was for the past few days. Rohan is cooking me his famous eggs on toast. And there's this:

BRADLEY/COLIN & MERLIN/ARTHUR LOVE POST
HERE

(I'm not really a vid fan, but there are enough animated GIFs here to keep me staring for HOURS. Oh, boys.)

I think I will be well enough to do a workshop next week, now.

Three weeks to our trip EEEEE!!!

Got up. Ate leftover chicken soup. Had bath (may the water gods forgive me, but I didn't shower yesterday, hopefully it will even out). Got dressed...

...went back to bed and slept five hours.

All I've got now is a sore throat, a headache, a mild fever and total apathy. I can feel the sinuses are full but apart from one permanently blocked nostril the damn cold hasn't "broken" yet. I wish it would, I want to get the damn thing over with. I have to fly interstate and give a workshop on Tuesday and I don't want to be in a plane with sinus issues.

I must be sick cos I can't even enjoy the fact that we have a telly in the bedroom now. I could be watching Merlin in bed but I can't be bothered!

Bummer

Argh, I'm getting sick and as a result I am in a foul mood. I can't afford to get sick. I'm supposed to be interstate doing a workshop once a week for the next three weeks, and I have craploads to do on top of that. Maybe I'll go home early and snooze.

Just as well I had such a good day yesterday. I worked part of the day on Friday (had a seminar on the Madoff scandal to go to) so I took a long lunch break yesterday. In the space of 90 minutes I bought one pair of Tevas and one pair of sneakers (both for the holiday), a top and a pair of pants, as well as ordering new contact lenses and getting a prescription filled.

We cleaned out our hall cupboard on the weekend and ditched loads of crap that hadn't been touched for years. There's nothing like cleaning out someone else's house to make you realise how much crap you have in your own!

I only have fifteen work days (including today) before we go to the UK. Eeee!
vanessarama: (merlin boys)
1. Holiday update: Eurostar is now booked. All we have left is the car hire. We leave five weeks from Friday. Eeee!

2. EEEE MERLIN TRAILER! I don't know if we will go to the screening at BFI - we'll be in Bury St Edmunds, and it's on a Sunday which means transport will be tricky, and I've vowed never to pin my hopes on a celebrity appearance ever again. But I'm thinking about it.

3. We finally watched all of s2 and 3 of Ashes to Ashes. Quite, quite extraordinary. I was totally hooked, especially trying to work out what was going on in that final series.

4. Last night Rohan watched an episode of Mission: Impossible which featured Leonard Nimoy doing the worst Australian accent in the world. It went something like this:

NIMOY: Oi knoow a borss corck beck in ‘ong Kong…
ME: Boss cock. WHUT.
ROHAN: Do you think he’s actually going to say “Strewth”?
NIMOY: Beaut!
ROHAN: I wonder if he’ll use any actual Australian slang.
ME: Nah. All our real slang is too rude.

5. Maybe it's the post-funeral strangeness talking, but I got back to work yesterday and I honestly do not give a shit about a lot of the work-stuff I used to. It's as if I've suddenly realised that this is not my life, there is more to life, and it's important to bloody well live it and enjoy it and not worry about some member getting their knickers in a twist over trivial matters. It just doesn't matter that much any more.

6. Also post-funeral and post-clean-up: I am determined to clean up my damn house and throw out a lot of the crap I've been hanging on to. One clean-up project per weekend. Yayes?
vanessarama: (merlin boys)
Hey, Channel 10. Cutting two entire scenes from the s2 finale of Merlin = NOT COOL.

I'll be in Swan Hill and internetless most of the week, peeps, dealing with funeral and house-clearing. Be good and happy, not least of all to yourselves and one another. <3

How am I supposed to get any work done with new sex0r pics of the boys AND JULIA CHALLENGING THE PM?????

ON the one hand I am one of the millions who've lost faith in Kevvy; on the other hand, I think Julia would be such a great PM that I don't want her to blow her chances now in a challenge. And either way, I fear greatly that these shenanigans may lose Labor the next election.

On the other hand, KRudd seems to have lost them the next election anyway.

I AM SO JUMPY AND JITTERY. Seriously. How am I supposed to keep my mind on work?

Keep an eye on KevinRuddExPM. HAHAHAHAHA.

I'm going on the radio this morning! Just a regional ABC. Shouldn't be too stressful (fingers crossed).

I had a crap day yesterday and this morning on the train I was all scowly. Know what cheers me up a lot at the moment? Listening to the many and varied cover versions of Hallelujah which were part of one of last year's Metafilter Music Challenges. My favourites:

- Hallefuckinlooya by MajorDundee
- Skallelujah by Jon Good and His All-Jon Good Band
- Chillelujah by icthuz
- Halle Hula by cortex

I have a secret joy in seeing Hallelujah covered non-reverently because I have a secret scorn for people who think it's a hymn. IT'S A SONG ABOUT SEX DAMMIT. THE WORD 'HALLELUJAH' DOES NOT MAKE IT A HYMN. I was taken aback when they did it at the bushfire victims' memorial service.

Using silly Bradley icon because that too cheers me up.

1. I have an HTC Desire. It is awesome! It does most of what an iPhone does but I like it much better, and the data plan that I'm on is better than any of the iPhone plans I could've got. I'm still working out how to use it to its fullest potential. But I LOVE IT.

2. Our president (chairman) got an AM in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. VIVA EL PRESIDENTE! I am pleased.

3. Rohan and I today did one of the most disgusting things it is possible to do; we cleaned the stove exhaust fan. I doubt it has been cleaned in 20 years; it certainly hasn't been done since we've been here. Oh, it was revolting. The cobwebs and greasy cooking smoke had mutated into some kind of world-conquering super-grease which killed two chux wipes, one scrubbing brush and one nylon scourer. But we triumphed! The rest of the house is a mess but our exhaust fan is clean!

4. Speaking of cooking, I made some mega awesome slow-cooked lamb shanks the other day.

Mega awesome slow-cooked lamb shanks method for future reference )

The stroppy professor from yesterday emailed our poor bookkeeper last night.

it is now 20:19... where is this book

I have just written an icily polite and slightly scathing email in response, as poor Chez is intimidated by him. I used to be intimidated by people, but now if people are self-important and rude, they don't deserve special treatment, or ultra-niceness, and I refuse to let Chez be upset by them.

On to better things! Here is a Character Meme nicked from [livejournal.com profile] upthegardenpath.

- Leave a comment and indicate which fandom interest of the ones we share you would like to think about (Merlin, LOTR, Doctor Who both new and old, Buffy and Angel, Lost)
- I'll respond by asking you three questions to satisfy my curiosity that are hypothetical and related to your choice above.
- Update your journal with the answers to your questions.
- Include this explanation and offer to ask other people questions.

Crispness in the air. Scent of wood smoke. Trees shading to the red end of the spectrum. Wearing delicious cashmere and wool and silk handknits. Coming home to a warm home, a purring cat and knitting.

I love autumn so, so much.

Morning, fellow humans!

In spite of the fact that I have not been sleeping well, and have been having weird weird dreams*, it is a positive-feeling morning. I wish you all many good things today.

I myself have been busy as a beavery bee. Or a bee-y beaver. I have done loads of good work including tackling a few things that I'd been postponing because they were making me go UGH UGH UGH. I have begun knitting a big thick jacket because it's getting DAMN COLD. I have been a Good Daughter by having good conversations with both my mother (for Mother's Day) and my father (for his birthday). I have booked myself (and Rohan and other-V) into hotels in Suffolk and Compiegne :)

About the only thing I haven't done is finish my damn Merlin WIP on the kinkmeme. I know exactly where it's going, I know how it will end... they just don't want to make it easy for me.

* Last night's dreams included seeing on the news that Bradley James was caught on film sleepwalking in a state of partial undress. This has been by far the best of my recent dreams.
vanessarama: (merlin boys)
The other evening, my train driver announced "We have now reached our cruising altitude of approximately 1.2 metres." People laughed. It was good :)

The Boss overheard me saying I am having trouble sleeping, and recommended a day off. I think I will do it, next week or the week after. I've had some low-level not-quite-rightness for a couple of weeks now, and I slept most of last Saturday, thinking I was coming down with something.

My flu shot barely hurt at all. Yayes!

It's getting colder, so naturally my thoughts are of knitting. I'm currently working on... let me see...

* Ishbel shawl in purple Wollmeise
* Clothilde shawl in Mini Maiden wool/silk in what are very unusual colours for me
* Noro Kureyon 'paintbox' blanket for the lounge (well, for the cat, mainly)
* Green cashmere hoodie (to take to the UK)
* 'Blue raspberry' socks (the yarn is dark red and blue with touches of white, looks like ice cream with blue and red syrups on it)
* Sock yarn leftover blanket (I need to use up more sock yarn on socks/shawls so I can get more leftovers!)

I wonder if I've taken too many projects on? :D
