My US childhood had a completely different and equally unrealistic view of Ireland. Many Irish-Americans were vehemently pro-Catholic, and the IRA was dear to a lot of radical lefties. Not a whole lot of nuanced understanding of the situation from the Right or Left. Eventually I started noticing terrorism on both sides and just got depressed.
