What I thought of the first episode of Merlin season 2:
1. It was full of plot holes (Why did the evil sorceror get his glowy heart sealed up in a booby-trapped tomb if he wanted to live on? Why did Gaius and Merlin let the King wander around in a booby-trapped tomb? Why does nobody question how Merlin got out of the cells? WHY DOES NOBODY ASK HOW THE EVIL SORCEROR WAS DEFEATED???)
2. I am not as worried about Arthur being a big meanie as some people. From his POV, Merlin is a shit servant. Probably the only reason he's lasted this long is that he saved Arthur's life, and Arthur is clearly very fond of him. Arthur's got more to worry about than just a few inconveniences; the fall off the horse could've injured him, and his dad will undoubtedly have a few things to say (and some damages money to distribute) about the horses running rampant through the town. If only they'd left in the chamber pot scene he'd have even more to be cross about.
3. Also, I didn't find the Arthur/Gwen stuff jarring, as lots of people seem to. We aren't going to get canonical Arthur/Merlin, ever. We are going to get Queen Guinevere, because we do have a legend to develop some semblance to. I am quite happy about that, because Gwen is lovely, and I am quite looking forward to seeing how they develop it, and I know we are not going to get canonical Arthur/Merlin. They've given us loads of subtext, so let's be happy with that. Just enjoy the pretty, fandom, and remind yourselves: This is what fanfiction is for.
4. I do not care that it was full of plot holes, because:
5. Gratuitous bare-chested Arthur so pretty! Angsty Merlin so pretty! PossiblyPossessedMerlin so pretty! ComedyEyes Arthur so pretty! Gwen so pretty! Morgana so pretty! Fatherly Uther! EyebrowGaius! Comedy moments galore! Subtext galore!
ETA: I just realised I am writing a post about Merlin before 7 AM in the morning, on a work day. See what you've done, Colin Morgan?
